USC Iovine and Young Academy Dean’s Development Prizes are awarded to students or teams in the USC Iovine and Young Academy. Teams must have at least one Academy student who is a rising sophomore, rising junior, or rising senior (see below), and in a leadership role on the team. Other members must be current USC students, graduate or undergraduate, and may come from any USC school or academic unit. Students may compete for the awards by submitting proposals that demonstrate exceptional creativity and feasibility in the design of a breakthrough business, technology, product, service or system. Proposals should have significant potential for practical application in new or existing businesses, industries or fields, and for societal transformation or impact. The awards will be used to fund further development or implementation of selected proposals.
The following awards are available for Spring 2018:
Freshman Development Prize
> Awarded to a team lead by a rising IYA sophomore, $2,500
Sophomore Development Prize
> Awarded to a team lead by a rising IYA junior, $5,000
Social Impact Prize
>Awarded for a team lead by a rising IYA senior, $10,000 (see separate prize criteria)
A jury consisting of Academy faculty, industry advisors, and leaders from relevant fields will evaluate submitted proposals. The prizes will be awarded based on the following criteria:
> Originality and creativity
> Level of completion, including number and nature of remaining steps to implementation
> Feasibility, including costs to manufacture, distribute, market, implement, etc.
> Potential reach or scope in terms of numbers and types of individuals, groups or communities that may benefit from the proposed idea
Project submissions should include all applicable documentation or materials, including but not limited to:
> Working prototypes
> Business model
> Marketing and communication plans
> Feasibility studies
> Supporting data or analytics
Applications must be completed no later than 11:59 PM (PDT) Monday, April 16, 2018.
> No student may serve as the qualifying Iovine and Young team member, as described above, for more than one team.
> All team members must be current USC students in good academic standing.
> There is no entry fee.
> Each team shall not submit more than one proposal.
> The subject of the proposal must be the original idea of that particular team or a member thereof.
> Proof of ownership or control over IP may be required.
> If a team is found to have submitted an idea that is not original, it will be disqualified.
> Teams may not consist of more than five members, but can be as few as one member.
Submitted proposals will be reviewed by Iovine and Young faculty and administration, and finalists selected.
Finalists or finalist teams will be asked to make a five-minute presentation to the judging panel on May 1, 2018 (10 a.m. – 12 noon).
The jury will adjourn to adjudicate the prize. All prize winners will be announced May 1, 2108. The Iovine and Young Academy reserves the right to select no finalists or make no award in the event that a suitable submission is not identified.
Funds from the IYA Social Impact Prize are intended to be used for necessary actions consistent with the strategies outlined in your plan and may be used for such expenses as materials; website or social platform development; legal or professional fees; marketing or market studies; etc. Winners should seek prior approval for all expenditures; approval is at the discretion of the dean. Prize funds may not be used for team member compensation.
Prize funds must be used within one year of the date of the initial award. Any funds not utilized for or applied to eligible expenses by such date are automatically forfeited.
