The MSIDBT can be completed through on-campus or online classes, or a combination of the two. 

The Academy offers in-person and online MSIDBT degrees. The new in-person pathway translates IYA’s well-established online IDBT curriculum into a distinct, hybrid learning experience that leverages IYA’s signature challenge-based reflective learning model and encourages students to take full advantage of the Academy’s well-equipped studio and lab spaces. Students who wish to pursue advanced study in integrated innovation are able to complete the IDBT degree in-person, online, or through custom combinations of online and in-person learning. 

The speed and complexity of doing business increases with every new technological advancement. As a result, the ability to engage in cross-disciplinary thinking is more critical than ever. Today’s industry leaders are seeking talent whose mindset enables them to "connect the dots”, and to synthesize information across projects, areas, or fields to transcend technological trends.  

Data analysts have identified skills such as problem solving, critical and creative thinking, collaboration, communication, and ethical reasoning as those that are most in-demand by all employers, and especially as enhancements to the STEM fields. In fact, over 90% of STEM employers cited such skills in a majority of their job descriptions. In addition, 73% of companies report that they are investing heavily in design, and half of all IT jobs now require knowledge and skills in digital design. Similar investments in nurturing creative thinking have now led to the growth of new “hybrid” job offerings that require adaptive thinkers who can work across traditional domains such as digital tools, data analysis, business operations and management, and design, which is critical to driving success in every sector. 

The Academy’s Master of Science in Integrated Design, Business and Technology teaches students how to think critically and creatively at the intersection of design, business, technology and communication. Our students develop high-level problem-solving abilities and skills that can be applied across a broad spectrum of industries, fields, and areas of endeavor, and a mindset that embraces lifelong learning. Through the strategic application of human-centered design fueled by diversity and inclusion, technology, agency, and unbridled creativity, Academy graduates develop new ways of working, learning, collaborating, and engaging with our communities, and drive positive change for industry, society and the environment.  

The in-person IDBT is available as a standalone degree as well as a progressive degree program (PDP) for qualified USC undergraduates. Progressive degree programs allow USC undergraduates to simultaneously earn both bachelor’s and master’s degrees in as little as five years.

Challenged-Based Reflective Learning (CBRL)

Students acquire Domain-Specific and Intersectional Skills in courses on human-centered design, design strategy, technology, the business of innovation, and communication. Students develop a powerfully agile mindset to analyze challenges, think across disciplinary boundaries, and synthesize diverse ideas to create new technologies, ventures, and humane solutions for purpose-driven societal change. Students are advised to take courses that are outside of their existing area of expertise and to develop strength in one or more of the emerging technology areas on which the Academy focuses.

Domain-Specific and Intersectional Skills

Students may take ACAD, IDSN, and PRIN courses approved by faculty and the program director. Students may also request approval for a limited number of courses offered outside the Academy that support their professional development.

MSIDBT students complete a minimum of 38 units, including 10 units of Challenged-Based Reflective Learning, 18 units of courses that build Domain-Specific and Intersectional Skills, and 10 units of Electives. The program can be completed in as few as four terms, with flexible options based on individual student interests and goals. For complete program information, see the USC Catalogue.

Our classes are taught by esteemed USC faculty in a collaborative, interactive online or in-person setting. All class sessions are live, allowing students and faculty to share ideas and work through problems in real time.  

The cross-disciplinary curriculum also offers two in-person elective residentials, in which student teams work on real-world challenge prompts, including in collaboration with leading non-profit and for-profit organizations in locations across the U.S. and the globe. These powerful and view-changing residentials provide students the opportunity to work up-close with people, organizations and companies that are changing the world, adding lasting value to the MSIDBT degree. 

The Academy offers two unique five-day immersive residential experiences through its Master of Science in Integrated Design, Business and Technology (MSIDBT). 

The IDSN 510 Integrative Practices Residential (IPR) is an on-campus elective for first-semester MSIDBT students. This fast-paced workshop focuses on the dynamics of team-based, collaborative problem solving, taking students through proven methods and tools for addressing issues that most often affect companies and their constituents. Students benefit from direct input and insights from industry experts, culminating in a live pitch to a panel of select professionals and faculty. 

Available to all graduate and undergraduate students, the IDSN 515 Professional Practices Residential (PPR) places student teams on the ground and inside organizations in the U.S. and elsewhere to research areas in need of innovation. Through direct contact with company personnel, stakeholders and users, students apply the techniques of human-centered design to develop solutions to significant, even intractable real-world problems. PPR partners have included the American Heart Association, IDEO, Children’s Hospital Los Angeles (CHLA), Two Bit Circus, and Los Angeles World Airports (LAX). Learn more about the PPR experience here.

M.S. Integrated Design, Business and Technology

The Academy Effect

The Academy’s uniquely integrative curriculum teaches students to achieve fluency in the languages and methodologies of design, technology, business, and communication. Students will also learn how these disciplines work synergistically to spark new ideas and solutions across industries. Working in cross-disciplinary teams, students will: 

Conceive and develop solutions to complex design, business and technological challenges 

Collaborate with leading companies on real-world problems during intensive design sprints 

Cultivate a strong professional network with people from diverse industry backgrounds

Additionally, graduates of the Master of Science in Integrated Design, Business, and Technology will gain: 

A foundation in the languages and methodologies of design, technology and business. 

An understanding of how these and other disciplines can work synergistically to present unique and potentially groundbreaking ideas and solutions in a variety of fields of endeavor. 

Increased facility and applied skills in visual and communication design, information technology, business modeling, management and more. 

An ability to both manage and work in creative team environments, take part in and lead cross-disciplinary project teams, and excel in technology-driven business and design environments.

A hallmark of the Academy’s mission is the mandate to provide learning across multiple platforms that include rigorous instruction, research, and experimentation, but also deep dives into real-world problem solving with existing companies and institutions. Through the Academy’s expansive Challenge-Based Reflective Learning approach, students have unprecedented opportunities to learn from top-tier executives, creatives, technologists, and thought leaders from around the globe.

While all students may take any combination of online and in-person courses, students enjoy priority registration for courses that are offered in the modality of their program.  

What is the difference between the on-campus and the online MSIDBT programs? 

Domestic students can be part-time, i.e. take less than 8 units of 400- or 500-level coursework per term. Please note that to be eligible for Federal Financial Aid, you need to enroll in at least 4 units (50% of full-time enrollment) each term. 

Internationals must be full-time students during fall and spring semesters in order to maintain their visa status, i.e. take at least 8 units (out of which a minimum of 5 units must come from in-person courses). Enrollment in summer courses is optional. 

Can I enroll in the program part-time?  

Tuition currently costs $2354 per unit per term. The cost of tuition is determined by USC’s central administration and is published on the USC Schedule of Classes for each term. A few courses may require additional fees. 

MSIDBT students are required to complete 38 units to graduate. Current undergraduate students enrolled in our Progressive Degree Program are eligible for a 32% unit reduction.

MSIDBT Program-Specific Merit Scholarships: All applicants to our graduate programs are automatically considered for our merit scholarships; the number and amount of scholarship awarded vary each year (we welcome new cohorts in the fall semester only). As an example, for AY 2024-2025, a selected number of applicants received a $10,000 scholarship ($5,000 in the fall, and $5,000 in the spring) to help cover tuition expenses; renewable for their second year in the program depending on their academic performance. 

Merit scholarships are awarded based on exceptional academic or professional achievements or promise.  

MSIDBT Program-Specific Student Job Opportunities: grad students may be eligible to apply for part-time hourly jobs in the following areas: 

Demand for student workers varies and is usually determined a few weeks before or around the beginning of the semester. 

Our department does not offer graduate assistantships or full-time positions for students.  

Are there scholarships or other financial assistance available?  

Yes, the Academy supports up to six student veterans with up to $10,000 each/year. For eligibility information, please consult the following page: Yellow Ribbon - Office of Academic Records and Registrar. 

Do you have Yellow Ribbon (Student-Veteran) funds available?  

Generally, we do not recommend taking more than 12 graduate units per term; some students may be able to complete the program within three terms (e.g. fall, spring, and summer, or fall, spring, fall). 

USC does not permit graduate students to enroll in more than 16 units. Students wishing to carry more than 16 units must have prior permission from the Academy’s academic leadership; such permission will be granted only in exceptional circumstances. 

How fast can I finish the program? What is the maximum number of course units I may take? 

USC requires domestic graduate students to complete their master’s program within 5 years. Approved leaves of absences (up to a total of two years or four semesters) are not counted in the time allowed for completion of degree requirements. 

Academic programs may grant an extension of one semester at a time, up to a maximum of two years. In unusual cases, the Graduate School may be petitioned for further extensions. 

International students on F-1 visas are required to complete the program within 2 years. Their official program end date is stated on page one of their I-20 document. Students who are unable to meet the academic program requirements by the program end date must apply for a Program Extension before their program end date. 

How long do I have to finish the program? 

Yes, it is. Importantly, only the on-campus MSIDBT program is F-1 visa eligible. International students admitted into the online program cannot apply for a U.S. visa. 

Both the on-campus and the online M.S. in Integrated Design, Business and Technology (as well as our bachelor’s programs) are STEM-designated by the Department of Homeland Security. International students enrolled in these programs are not only eligible to apply for Optional Practical Training—temporary employment directly related to F-1 students’ main area of study—but also to apply for the STEM OPT Extension: a 24-month extension of their post-degree-completion OPT employment authorization.

Is the M.S. in Integrated Design, Business and Technology a STEM program? 

Yes, our on-campus MSIDBT program is OPT-eligible as well as STEM OPT Extension-eligible. Please note that the online MSDBT program is not visa-eligible. 

Our M.S. in Integrated Design, Business and Technology (as well as our bachelor’s programs) are STEM-designated by the Department of Home Security. International students enrolled in our on-campus programs are not only eligible to apply for Optional Practical Training—temporary employment directly related to F-1 students’ main area of study—but also to apply for the STEM OPT Extension: a 24-month extension of their post-degree-completion OPT employment authorization. 

As an international student, can I do OPT? 

Generally, applicants must have a bachelor's degree to be eligible for a master’s program. We may grant exceptions. 

Am I eligible to apply for the MSIDBT program? 

Only current USC undergraduate students are eligible to apply if they have completed at least 64 units of coursework excluding AP, IB, and transfer units earned prior to graduation from high school and have a minimum 3.0 cumulative USC GPA at the time of application (more details here).  

We welcome Progressive Degree Program (PDP) applications from all USC majors. 

Am I eligible to apply for the Progressive MSIDT program? 

Academic or professional experience in these areas is valuable but not required. Admitted applicants come from a wide variety of academic and professional backgrounds and this diversity of student knowledge and experience is critical in driving the collaborative challenge-based curriculum in which solutions are drawn from the full range of disciplines.  

Do I need specific experience in design, business, or technology to be eligible to apply?   

No, an individual may apply to either one or the other program during the same application cycle. If admitted, a student may request to switch from one program to the other. 

Can I apply to both the on-campus and the online MSIDBT programs? 

The application fee is $90; the optional SlideRoom portfolio submission is an additional $10.  

You will be able to request a fee waiver for the $90 only after you have started (but not submitted) your online USC application and indicated your program of interest. You will be asked for documentation to verify your eligibility for a waiver. If your request is approved, you will then be able to submit your application and skip payment of the application fee. Please refer to our Fee Waivers page to see if you are eligible. 

Is there an application fee? Can I get the application fee waived?  

All USC graduate program applicants need to provide their personal information, resume, and their academic history, including official transcripts from all post-secondary educational institutions that they have attended (even if they have not completed a program). Our program-specific application materials include four essay questions, the optional submission of up to three letters of recommendation, and up to three optional portfolio items. 

What do I need to submit for my application? 

We do not require GMAT or GRE scores. International applicants may be required to submit proof of their English-language proficiency. 

No, the Iovine and Young Academy welcomes new students once a year, in fall semesters only. 

Can I apply to start in the spring or summer term? 

Generally, current and previous employers and professors who can speak to your skills, experiences, and accomplishments relevant to your potential to benefit from and contribute to the MSIDBT program are the best choices for obtaining letters of recommendation. Submitting letters of recommendation is optional. 

Who should my letters of recommendation come from?  

In most cases, IYA does not allow deferment.  

Can I defer my admission to a later term? 

Yes, you can take up to 8 units from outside of the Academy if approved by program leadership. 

Can I take classes at other USC departments at USC for degree credit?  

No, IYA does not accept coursework completed outside USC during your enrollment in the MSIDBT program for degree credit. 

Can I take classes outside USC for degree credit? 

With approval of program leadership, a maximum of 8 units of prior graduate coursework may be transferred from another institution if the courses were not applied to a prior degree.

Credit will only be allowed for courses (1) from an accredited graduate school, (2) of a quality of at least 3.0 on a 4.0 grading scale, (3) constituting a fair and reasonable equivalent to current USC course work at the graduate level (4) logically fitting into the program for the degree, and (5) completed within seven years of admission to our master’s degree program. Can I transfer in any previous units taken elsewhere towards the degree?
