The USC Iovine and Young Academy was founded in 2013 through a visionary gift through entrepreneurs and by Beats co-founders Jimmy Iovine and Andre “Dre. Dre” Young.

IYA provides a unique learning experience that prepares students to think critically, create, and innovate across industries at the intersection of technology, design and business. IYA offers a Bachelor of Science degree in Arts, Technology and Business of Innovation and a Master of Science in Integrated Design, Business and Technology. Students are placed in technology development, business strategy and product innovation positions upon graduation, and many of our graduates successfully commercialize their own startups before they even graduate.

IYA degrees leverage the unique Challenge-Based Learning Framework (CBL), an approach based on learning through complex sociotechnical challenges provided by industry and community partners, as well as driven by faculty and students. CBL cultivates generalizable techniques for sociotechnical innovation. Students develop a powerfully agile mindset to analyze challenges, think across disciplinary boundaries, and synthesize diverse ideas to create new technologies, ventures, and humane solutions for purpose-driven societal change. As students progress through the program, the curriculum adapts to align with their individual interests and selected paths.

Learning at IYA is applied and hands-on, leveraging our cutting-edge prototyping facilities and workspaces. Every studio, laboratory, workshop and classroom can serve as a creative ‘partner’ for creation, ideation, invention and innovation.
